Three questions before you switch.
- Do you want to direct the whole story or chat with a single defined character?
- Do you need keyword-triggered world information or manually chosen memory excerpts?
- Is portable export more important than avoiding local setup?
Workflow suggestions, with primary evidence. The options appear in task order, not quality order. We select documented controls and retain plan or setup limits. No conversation-quality, recall or popularity score is assigned.
Match the alternative to the job.
Build a story around a cast
DreamGen provides a scenario editor with characters, locations and story context. Its private scenario file can be shared before publication.
- Personality controls
The Scenario Editor defines characters alongside plot, setting, history, locations and objects.
- Multiple-character chats
Scenarios can contain multiple characters, with instructions to direct the roleplay. Coordination and plan limits are untested.
- Character export
Export a scenario file for another user to import privately. This does not establish universal character-card export compatibility.
The export is a DreamGen scenario, not established as a Tavern card. Current dollar quotes have no explicit currency code in the reviewed page, so we keep them outside the USD calculator.
CrushOn.AI
18+Select and reload memory excerpts
CrushOn’s documented Save Memories workflow lets you preserve selected conversation excerpts. Its editor also offers private and unlisted character visibility.
- Saved context & memory controls
Save Memories preserves selected conversation excerpts for loading or summarizing. This is not a guarantee of automatic recall.
- Private character visibility
Public, unlisted and private character visibility are documented; definition visibility is a separate setting.
Manual selection and loading are different from automatically preserving every event. Group chat between separate cards and native export remain unestablished in our review.
Chub AI
18+Choose the model connection
Chub gives a hosted character editor a configurable backend connection. Its Character Books are a relevant comparison for a writer already using Lorebooks.
- Personality controls
Character definitions include description, scenario, example dialogue and advanced prompt fields.
- Saved context & memory controls
Character Books supply keyword-triggered context. This does not establish automatic long-term recall.
- Account & model setup
The creator requires sign-in. Hosted subscriptions, third-party API keys or a local model connection can power chat; current prices remain unchecked.
Changing the backend adds setup and potentially separate billing. We have not tested Chub and SpicyChat with a matched model, and do not claim one has better memory.
Retain a card and configure the interface locally
SillyTavern documents card import and export, editable World Info and local installation. It is worth considering when a reusable file and backend choice are the main reasons to switch.
- Character export
The character panel includes import and export actions. We have not tested cross-platform round trips.
- Saved context & memory controls
World Info and document retrieval provide reference context. Recall depends on the selected backend and configuration.
- Local installation
A locally installed interface. Local installation alone does not make a cloud model or extension private.
The interface being free does not cover every model, media provider or hardware requirement. SpicyChat’s native export is not established, so an automatic transfer is not promised.
What happens to your existing character?
The reviewed SpicyChat guides do not establish native character-card export. Keep your own personality, greeting, scenario and example dialogue in a separate brief. Lorebook entries may need a separate recreation step, and a new card does not carry old chats or measured memory behavior.
Separate the definition, opening scene and examples from the platform. Inspect formats and check the imported fields before committing a longer project.
A free tier is only one part of the comparison
SpicyChat documents free avatar generation, while conversation images and text-to-speech belong to paid tiers. Decide whether your free-start requirement is for writing, an avatar, spoken replies or ongoing media generation.
Ask the same question of each candidate. A free interface, an advertised free tier and a numerical free allowance mean different things. Unknown free entitlement remains visible in our finder instead of being converted into a fully documented match.
Compare memory controls with one repeatable scene
Try a scene with two distinct characters and a short world fact: the old observatory opens only at dawn. Supply the world fact through the documented context mechanism, then introduce a different fact during dialogue. Check them separately later.
Record the plan, model where visible, context setting and any manual edits. These conditions can affect what enters the prompt. This is an evaluation you can perform; this article reports no completed quality benchmark and gives no memory score.
Common questions.
Which SpicyChat alternative has better memory?
We have not measured comparative recall. DreamGen scenario context, CrushOn saved excerpts, Chub Character Books and SillyTavern World Info are different documented ways to supply information. Use a repeated scene to evaluate the behavior you need.
Is there a free alternative with voice?
No fully documented free-and-voice match is established by this selection. Free interfaces may require a paid or separately configured voice backend, and hosted voice features may require a subscription. Our finder keeps those access gaps visible.
Can I export SpicyChat characters into SillyTavern?
SillyTavern import and export are documented, but native SpicyChat export has not been established in the reviewed sources. Rebuild a definition you own or inspect an authorized file; do not assume a direct transfer of cards, lore or chat history.
Sources & selection.
These candidates were selected from the documented controls in our platform passports. The source dates live in those passports. Interpretation and suggested exercises are our editorial work; paid plans, imports and long-term conversations have not been hands-on tested.
