SillyTavern data handling.
A private character and a private conversation are different questions. These notes describe published documents; account settings, exports and deletion outcomes were not tested.
- Who can access conversation data?
- Depends on the setup
Documentation says server data, including chats, is stored in plain text. The interface can connect to local or cloud models.
A cloud model, media engine or extension adds its own data handling. Local interface installation alone does not keep inference local.

Model-training use depends on the connected backend and other services.
Review the actual model provider; the interface documentation does not establish a cloud backend’s opt-out.

Reasons to investigate
- Character-card import and export are documented
- World Info supplies reference lore independently of the main definition
- Local and cloud model connections allow different deployment choices
Keep in mind
- The interface requires model access and more setup than a hosted companion service
- Cloud models and media extensions can introduce separate costs and data flows
- Local installation alone does not make the entire workflow private
What is SillyTavern?
SillyTavern is a locally installed interface for character conversations. It is free and open source, but needs access to a language-model backend. Its documentation describes local and cloud connections, as well as optional image-generation and text-to-speech integrations.
We would investigate it when owning the editable character files and choosing a model connection matter more than a guided subscription onboarding. The extra setup is part of that choice. Atlas has reviewed documentation, rather than installed or configured SillyTavern on this computer.
The character card is the reusable project
The design guide describes personality, scenario, first message and example dialogue. The character-management guide documents importing and exporting cards, along with organizing characters and group conversations. Keeping a card gives you an editable starting point outside a single hosted creator.
Before changing the model, save the card and note the configuration used for the scene. If behavior changes, compare the same brief and greeting with the new backend. A portable file preserves instructions; it cannot preserve identical responses across different models.
World Info and the context budget
World Info supplies background entries through configurable triggers and context settings. This lets world details live separately from the main character description. Relevant information still competes with the conversation for space in the selected model’s context.
Test one trigger before writing a large reference library. A short check makes it easier to distinguish an entry that never activated from an answer that used it incorrectly. We have not benchmarked retrieval, recall or any particular model configuration.
Free software and a complete local workflow
A free interface is only one part of the cost. A cloud model, voice provider, image backend or hardware for local inference can require a separate budget. The passport marks the software as locally installed and keeps those backend qualifications attached to media features.
For a fully local project, verify each model and extension connection individually. For a simpler hosted workflow, compare Chub or DreamGen. No universal subscription price can describe all SillyTavern setups, and we do not assign a zero-cost inference estimate.
Creating a character
Use the official guide for the current interface. These notes outline the documented workflow or the checks to make before choosing access.
- Read the official installation guide for your operating system.
- Choose a model backend and account for any provider or hardware cost.
- Create or import a card, then configure its personality and opening scene.
- Save an export and test any World Info, group or media integrations separately.
Common questions
Is SillyTavern free?
The interface is free and open source. Model inference, media providers and local hardware may cost extra.
Can SillyTavern export characters?
The character-management guide documents card export and import. We have not tested cross-platform round trips.
Is every SillyTavern chat local?
The interface runs locally, but a cloud model or extension can send data to its provider. Check each connection before treating the full workflow as local.
