A WORKFLOW-BASED SHORTLIST

Janitor AI alternativesStart with what you want to change.

For a Janitor AI shortlist, separate the character editor from the model that answers. A hosted creator, a story engine and a local interface ask for different amounts of setup. The candidates below have documented controls; Janitor’s own current feature and billing details remain an open review in our directory.

Three questions before you switch.

  1. Do you want a hosted character editor or control over the model connection?
  2. Do you already own a character card, or will you rebuild from a written definition?
  3. Is the priority reusable world information, manual saved memories or a larger cast?

Workflow suggestions, with primary evidence. The options appear in task order, not quality order. We select documented controls and retain plan or setup limits. No conversation-quality, recall or popularity score is assigned.

Match the alternative to the job.

Use a hosted editor with saved excerpts

CrushOn documents character fields and manual Save Memories controls. Its separate import guide describes loading compatible JSON or PNG cards into the creator.

Personality controls

Personality, appearance, greeting, scenario and example dialogue are described in the character creator.

Saved context & memory controls

Save Memories preserves selected conversation excerpts for loading or summarizing. This is not a guarantee of automatic recall.

Private character visibility

Public, unlisted and private character visibility are documented; definition visibility is a separate setting.

The tradeoff

Imports do not establish native export from CrushOn. Saving selected excerpts does not guarantee automatic recall. Its multi-role definition guide is not evidence of separate-card group chat.

Reuse world information across roleplay

SpicyChat documents keyword-triggered Lorebooks and several characters in a group conversation. It is worth investigating when world details and a cast are part of the writing workflow.

Saved context & memory controls

Keyword-triggered Lorebooks supply reference context. Memory Manager is paid; automatic Semantic Memory 2.0 is documented for True Supporter and above. Recall is untested.

Multiple-character chats

Multiple characters can share a group conversation. Context demands increase with the cast; current participant limits are unverified.

The tradeoff

Memory Manager and conversation media have paid-tier qualifications. Official pages disagree on the largest context limit, and we have not benchmarked recall or verified a current checkout amount.

Define a character and configure model access

Chub’s hosted interface separates the written character from its model connection. Character Books supply keyword-triggered reference information alongside the definition.

Personality controls

Character definitions include description, scenario, example dialogue and advanced prompt fields.

Saved context & memory controls

Character Books supply keyword-triggered context. This does not establish automatic long-term recall.

Account & model setup

The creator requires sign-in. Hosted subscriptions, third-party API keys or a local model connection can power chat; current prices remain unchecked.

The tradeoff

Model connections can introduce provider costs and configuration. Connecting a local backend does not make the hosted Chub interface local, and current subscription totals are not verified here.

Work with local character files

SillyTavern is the documented local-interface option in this selection. It supports portable character files, World Info and multiple model connections.

Character export

The character panel includes import and export actions. We have not tested cross-platform round trips.

Local installation

A locally installed interface. Local installation alone does not make a cloud model or extension private.

Account & model setup

Requires an LLM backend. Local and cloud connections are supported; provider keys or local model setup may be needed.

The tradeoff

You need to install and configure an interface and select a backend. This guide does not promise that any particular Janitor export is available or compatible; inspect a sample file before moving a project.

What happens to your existing character?

Janitor’s native export and current file format have not been verified in this edition. If you already have an authorized copy of a card, inspect its format before choosing a destination. Otherwise, rebuild your own character brief. Hidden definitions, account access and old chats are not supplied by this site.

Keep a brief before rebuilding.

Separate the definition, opening scene and examples from the platform. Inspect formats and check the imported fields before committing a longer project.

Read the migration guide

A model change and a character change are different experiments

Keep the definition fixed when comparing models. Keep the model and settings fixed when comparing two definitions, wherever a product exposes those choices. Changing both at once makes it difficult to understand which change affected the conversation.

Hosted platforms can make the first conversation easier to start. A configurable interface gives you more setup choices and more responsibility for the backend. The appropriate route depends on whether you want to write immediately or maintain a portable project.

Check the format before choosing the destination

A JSON file can be a character definition, a scenario or a chat archive. A PNG can be an ordinary portrait or a card with embedded data. A matching file extension does not settle compatibility.

Start with one character you own and check the name, description, opening message and examples after import. Verify any lore separately. Keep an untouched original file and note what the destination drops. Our migration guide explains the checks; the local builder creates a new V2 definition rather than exporting a Janitor account.

Common questions.

Is there a direct Janitor AI replacement?

These candidates overlap with parts of a character-writing workflow, but we have not tested them as exact replacements. Choose by the editor, model setup and portability you need; Janitor’s current controls remain unverified in our review.

Can I import a Janitor character into these platforms?

We have not verified a Janitor export or an end-to-end transfer. SillyTavern and the CrushOn guide document card import, but the source format and the destination’s handling of each field still need checking.

Does private character visibility keep all chat data local?

No such conclusion follows from that setting. Private visibility controls who can access a character. Model processing, storage and retention are separate questions; a local interface can still call a remote model.

Sources & selection.

These candidates were selected from the documented controls in our platform passports. The source dates live in those passports. Interpretation and suggested exercises are our editorial work; paid plans, imports and long-term conversations have not been hands-on tested.
